REVESTIMIENTOS – Barbarita Cardozo
Barbarita Cardozo’s most recent research revolves around the circle, a figure that contrasts the usual anthropocentric way of perceiving space, time and matter -with the usual reticular structure. Like Cardozo’s previous projects, this inquiry is mediated by his studies in fashion design and visual arts, which allows her to formalize a constant dialogue and critical analysis of the practices established between both disciplines.
The initial approaches to the circle began with two-dimensional exercises. However, her knowledge of fashion pattern making, where this geometric shape is used as a basic pattern for the manufacture of capes, skirts, fans and other accessories intended to dress different types of bodies, allowed her to expand towards three-dimensionality, covering space and, therefore, embracing architecture as a new field of research.
Revestimientos has two starting points: the first is the study of the curved and circular folded paper sculptures of Josef Albers, certain pieces by Lygia Clark and Lygia Pape, the works of Franz Erhard Walther and the influence of Eva Hesse in the late work of Sol Lewitt. The second point consists of the elements of measurement and precision to create, maintain and verify constructions. Not only within fashion, but also within architecture and design. Cardozo creates a series of plumb bobs -employed both by master builders and fashion designers- but in this case their scale is larger than usual, in order to leave them suspended over the diagonal that draws the architecture of Plural’s space. This reveals the dialogue between the circle and the orthogonality, and therefore its grid. There is no undulation without verticality. The prototypes entitled Anexo 1 and Anexo 2, made from wicker and veneer respectively, invite us once again to observe the materials used in the previously mentioned disciplines, which, from everyday forms decontextualized from their functionality, clothe objects that lead us to take a new look at what is around us, investigating their layers of materials, scales and uses.
