THIRD SPACE: Localidad
Tercer Espacio is the name given to the first project that is carried out annually in Plural and that seeks to develop a particular concern of the team inspired by local situations and problems, in the company of guest artists and curators. This title originates from the ideas and contributions of the Indian thinker and cultural theorist Homi Bhabha; For him, a third space is a platform for the construction of the present with multilateral contributions; it detaches itself from oppressive history, generating meeting spaces, hybridizations of thought and action.
Tercer Espacio is imagined, conceived and executed both for the local artistic community (students, teachers, artists, curators, cultural managers, among others) as well as for a wide variety of audiences that visit us: from residents of the town in the that we are located and that do not have a continuous relationship with art, even unsuspecting passers-by interested in observing and reflecting on our curatorial and artistic proposal.
This year we wanted to give continuity to an interest that has been pursuing us for some time: to understand ourselves as a cultural space within an extensive geographical point such as the town of Barrios Unidos, which has nearly 250,000 inhabitants. To achieve this we convened two curatorial groups. On the one hand, the TRansHisTor(ia) Team, made up of María Sol Barón Pino and Camilo Ordóñez Robayo, proposes “Neighbourhoods of the world, unite!”, an exhibition at the Plural facilities that accounts for the urban, architectural and economic development of the city. locality in the company of artists who reside, have their studio/workshop or a particular relationship with this geographical place. The sample is then made up of pieces that indicate characteristic components of the town such as the auto parts market known as one of the largest in Latin America; its market squares (August 7 and October 12); facades of popular houses that have been maintained over time and images of the structural changes in the architecture of certain neighborhoods.
On the other hand, the La Ñapa Collective made up of Nathalie Libos, María Roda, Jesús David Sierra and Daniel Valencia, proposes the immersion entitled “Follow that there is!”. Five gastronomic and/or food points of Barrios Unidos were selected so that there, five artists also of their selection, carry out temporary interventions encouraging the tour of the town through one of its economic activities: gastronomy. Through conversations with the owners, administrators, cooks and bakers of these places, it was possible to intervene a market place, a bakery, a restaurant in the Colombian Pacific, a yew court and an urban part of the Alcázares neighborhood to point out the edible plants that They also live in the city.
